This is a three-day training for teachers in implementing values formation and education activities for children of migrants.

Training Objectives

At the end of the training seminar, the participants will be able to facilitate the following to the children of migrant workers:

  1. Discuss the work, the difficulties and sacrifices of their parents and relatives abroad;
  2. Express their thoughts and feelings on their physical separation with their parents;
  3. understand the positive and negative effects of migration to them, their families and communities;
  4. Cite the things that they can do as pay back for their parents’ sacrifices and how they can strengthen their families despite the absence of their parents;
  5. Discuss the value of saving and wise use of money, disavow the values of materialism and consumerism, and reject colonial mentality;
  6. Assess relationships in their families and discuss things that they can do to foster good relations and communication among family members;
  7. Evaluate themselves, set goals and aspirations for themselves and their families and appreciate the value of education in realizing these dreams; and
  8. Defend the need for equality between men and women  and practice shared responsibility in the household.

Target Participants

The target participants of the training are children of overseas Filipino workers. The target participants of the training of trainers are the following:

  1. Guidance counselors of elementary and secondary schools
  2. Teachers of Araling Panlipunan and Values Education in public and private schools
  3. Social workers
  4. Focal persons of Migration Offices and Resource Centers

Positive and Negative Effects of Migration    
The participants will be able to impart on the children the following:        

1. Cite the  positive contributions of migration to their families, communities and country;
2. Identify the negative effects of migration on them and their families
3. Enumerate the things that they can do to make their families strong despite the absence of their parents.

Module 3:

Instilling Savings Consciousness, Disavowing Consumerism  
The participants will be able to impart on the children the following:

1. Discuss the value of saving and wise use of money as one of their modest contributions to the early and eventual return of their parents from abroad; and
2. Disavow the values of  consumerism and reject  colonial mentality.

Bridging the Gap, Fostering Good Communications and Relations    
The participants will be able to impart on the children the following:

1. Assess communication and relationships among members of their families;
2. Identify the barriers that affect good communication and relationships in their families
3. Discuss things that they can do towards fostering harmonious relations, and open communications despite the physical absence of their parents

Importance of Education and Goal Setting                    
The participants will be able to impart on the children the following:

1. Assess themselves, appreciate their experiences and express their thoughts and feelings about their own self-discovery;
2. Set goals and aspirations for themselves and for their families and identify the barriers to the realization of these dreams
3. Appreciate the value of education toward the attainment of their goals

Gender Sensitivity Training
The participants will be  able to impart on the children the following:

1. Differentiate sex and gender, sex roles and gender roles;
2. Identify female and male stereotypes
3. Compare their own with other people’s beliefs about the roles and abilities of both sexes
4. Define the concept of gender sensitivity in relation to feminization of migration
